My grandfather died Saturday morning, August 22nd after many long years of chemotherapy, a broken hip, degenerating health, and dementia, my Grandpa Takai has passed away at the age of 89.  We all knew it was coming, and all of us, including my grandfather knew it was time for him to leave us.  Of all my relatives, I was closest to those on my mother's side, the Takai's.  It's really sad to think that he's gone. He was such a great person and a wonderful grandpa.  Just to highlight a bit, he was in the nisai regiment during WWII, he had four daughters with his first wife, was divorced, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (that would be the mormon church), married my grandmother (who had four daughters of her own before their marriage) and lived happily into old age.  He and my grandmother were extrodinary gardeners, growing beautiful orchids and other wonderful plants.  When they visited us on the East Coast, he'd always help out in our garden, determined to get some green growing in our Virginian clay soil.  The garden was going great, till he left.  I suppose we just don't have the green thumb he did.  Now that I think about it, he was in his late 70s, early 80s when he did that.  He also lived longer than my great grandmother (they were about the same age, she died about a year ago).

So I'm wondering if I ought to call my dad and ask if I can't go down to California to help my mother help my grandmother.  Classes don't start till the 10th of September, and if I'm able, I'd like to attend the memorial service.  I just wish I could have gone earlier when he was still alive.  I did see him last summer, which is more recent than a lot of my siblings, but I still wish I could have been more help in his last days.

-----------------

UPDATE:  I am poor.  I have no money, so I won't be attending the funeral.  It's sad, but I'll get over it.  I would however, like to plan to visit my grandmother sometime next year.  She is, after all, alone now.  No relatives live with her, and while she is a good 20 years younger than my grandfather, I'm pretty sure she doesn't have anyone living with her, and after my grandfather's funeral, they will be preoccupied with their own lives.  My family does do a good job of taking care of eachother, but I don't live on the West Coast, so I'm going to try and visit her during my semester off.

Now, as mentioned above, I am poor.  SO.  I'll be doing commissions to try and raise money so I can make the trip next year (probably middle of Janurary sometime, and hopefully I will be getting a job to add to the coffers).  I've approximated that the trip (the plane ride there and back, plus the bus ride down to Salt Lake City is going to be about $700.  So here's how commissions will be set up:

Bust: $6
Half-length: $11
Full-length: $16
chibi: $8

Add color: +$5 (fully rendered, with a gradient background)

Here are some examples of what the commissions will look like: Commission Examples by Nytrinhia
I do have two styles of drawing, so I will ask for specifications of what you want.

I'd say that's more than fair.  I take payment through paypal to the address Ftepainting @ yahoo . com (without the spaces, if you please)

If you pity me enough to tell me that you wish you could commission me but can't, do me a solid and let others know, please.  Social networking only goes so far by myself.

My work in the 100 Themes Boot Camp will not stop, nor will my attempts at getting pages done for my comic.  But we are getting the carpet at our apartment replaced and I am still looking for a job, so I may not be as active on DA.  I will be on at least once a day to check messages (I watch too many people for my own good) so I won't be completely gone.

Anyway, thanks for all of your kind words and heartfelt feelings.  They mean so much to me.

I can understand your situation. Two years ago, my grandmother passed away. She'd been fading fast and we were expecting it, but it still hit us all hard. But I couldn't make it to the funeral. I'm in the military, and the stars just didn't want to align to let me go. It sucks so bad.

My Heart goes out to you...
And I'm sure your grandmother could use the company anytime you could get down there. It's a lonely thing. Hopefully you got to see him before he went, though. I was sadly uninformed when my grandad went into the hospital. I only knew when I was called in the middle of breakfast last november. Anyway. Love at you and all your family. My condolences.

If I had money, i'd buy, but seeing as how life is expensive, I happen to know all too well where you're coming from. I shall do my best to help you out when there's spare money around.

 Sorry, darling.

S'okay. Honestly I wasn't expecting much of a response, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. Most of the people who watch me aren't looking to commission artists anyway.

Why did you have to quit your other job again? It seemed like a pretty good gig.

And, again, my deepest condolences go out to your y, jufamily. Tell your Mom I'm so sorry. I know how hard this is; it's been over a year, and I still can't believe my Poppie is gone. I would have given anything for him to be with me today, helping me set up my computer in this new apartment and use all this ridiculous little gizmos he insisted I buy freshman year and still haven't figured to use on my own. I would give anything just to talk to him for a little while, just to hear that he's okay, just to kiss him like I didn't that day because I had a fever and I didn't want him to catch it.

Loss hurts so much. You feel like part of your world has shattered and least half of your heart, but in the end, it'll all be okay. It's something of a cheesy, over-used sentiment, but it's over-used because it's true; it will never stop hurting, but in the end you'll be All Right. You'll be stronger, even. Because, in truth, our grandpas have no need of our tears - it's ourselves we're crying for, how much we're going to miss them. They are in Rest, they are in Paradise, and by dying, I feel like they've taught us something very valuable about Life that they wouldn't want us to miss.

In short: if you wanna talk, kiddo, you know where and how reach me.

Because I couldn't handle the physical labor. And I couldn't get as many hours because so many girls were clamboring for the job and the guy in charge doesn't like to say no.

And I'm okay. I'm much better than I thought I'd be. I guess I'm just not that much of a crier.

Even expected deaths are hard. :( I lost my grandma to cancer last February, just before I met Osha. I got to go to her funeral, and I felt it really helped me have closure. I highly suggest you try to go. :)

I especially encourage it since I think funerals are a wonderful way to let the one who passed know that we love them and miss them (I like to think their spirits attend their funerals).

Your grandpa sounds like such a great guy. I want to learn to garden and farm too!

Well I had you put on the "In need of commissions/help" list at ^ArtisticAunJuli's journal like a month ago, but now I have to tell her to update the prices, since they're lower now... :) Hope she does it quickly, I can only guess how much she has to do as a gallery moderator.

Good luck raising money then!

Thanks. And don't worry about your grammar XD There're people who are native to the language and have worse grammar.

But yeah, I know what you mean. If I can't visit now, I'll see about going during the Winter, because if my grandmother isn't going around visiting anyone, she's going to be by herself.

Uhh... A lil granny by herself... Uff... This made me remember I have a greatgrandmother alive. She lives by herself and she's still lucid, I wish I could visit her more frequently. I feel better knowing that a lot of family visit her or take her to go shopping, or to a nice trip... My parents always make sure she comes to all our birthday parties and we celebrate Mother's Day with her, she's so lively and funny. I drop by her house once a month but she's a busy lady XD The ammount of descendants she has is impressive XD ah and she's an LDS too :) I'll feel extremely sad when the time comes, but happy knowing she had a just life and was a good virtuous woman

I'm glad he's no longer in pain too. It was hard last summer and one the phone with my mother, when I'd hear him calling for my grandmother, because he's been basically blind for the past year or so and he wanted to make sure she wasn't too far away. It was cute and heartbreaking at the same time. And then he would start the same conversations at least five times in the same day, and no matter how many times we had the same talk, he'd forget it in five minutes. At least how his mind is more free and not restricted by the ails of old age and a failing body.

The only problem with going down (because I'm sure my grandmother wouldn't mind) is convincing my dad to pay for me to get down there.
